Sling TV Black Screen on Android TV
A black screen in Sling TV can mean the stream failed to load, the app stalled, or your Android TV lost a stable connection. First, switch to another channel. If that works, return to the original channel. If every channel stays black, force stop Sling, restart the TV, and check your network before changing app settings. These steps will help you find the cause.
Identify Where the Problem Starts
Notice whether the Sling menu is visible. If the guide and controls appear but the video area is black, focus on the stream and internet connection. If Sling opens to a completely blank screen, start with the app itself. If the Android TV home screen is also black, check the TV input, power, and any connected streaming box.
Try two or three channels and an on-demand title. A single affected channel points to that feed or program rather than a general app failure. Open another video streaming app, too. If it fails, investigate the device or network. If possible, test Sling on a second device using the same account.
Force Stop Sling and Restart Android TV
Returning to the home screen may leave Sling running in the background. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Sling TV, then select Force stop. On some TVs, Sling appears directly under Apps or in a system apps list. Open it again and test playback.
If the screen is still black, restart the TV from its system menu. A full restart reloads the operating system and app components, while a quick press of the remote’s power button may only put the device to sleep. If the TV or streaming box is frozen, disconnect its power, wait about a minute, and reconnect it. Once it has started fully, launch Sling again.
Check the Connection and Try Another Network
A temporary drop in available bandwidth can leave a Sling stream black while the guide still loads. In Settings > Network & Internet, confirm that your Android TV is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. Try another streaming app and, if available, run a connection test on the TV. A phone working well on the same network does not prove the TV has a strong signal.
Restart your modem and router if other apps also struggle. If your TV supports Ethernet, a wired connection can help you test whether Wi-Fi is the issue. Alternatively, connect the TV to a different network briefly. If Sling works there, focus on the original connection. A mobile hotspot can serve as a test, but streaming may use substantial mobile data.
Clear Sling’s Cache, Then Its App Data
If Sling alone keeps showing a black screen, clear its temporary files. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Sling TV, then choose Clear cache. Menu names vary by Android TV model, and you may need to open Storage & cache first. Relaunch Sling afterward.
If that does not help, return to the same screen and choose Clear data or Clear storage. This removes Sling’s saved app settings and signs you out, so have your login details ready. It does not erase your Sling account or subscription. Sign in again and test a live channel and an on-demand program.
Update or Reinstall the App
Open the Google Play Store on your Android TV, find Sling TV, and install any available update. Also check for a TV system update under Settings > System > About > System update, though the path can differ by device. Updates may resolve playback problems caused by outdated software.
If the problem persists, uninstall Sling from its app page or the Play Store, then install it again from the Play Store. Restart the TV after installation and sign back in. If the store does not offer the app for your device, check whether your model is supported instead of installing an unofficial copy.
What If Only One Channel Is Black?
Change to another channel and back. If other channels and on-demand programs play normally, the affected feed may be temporarily unavailable. A program-specific viewing restriction can also prevent playback, usually with an on-screen message or error code. Record the channel, program, approximate time, and any code you see. Avoid resetting the entire TV for a problem confined to one channel.
If you use an external Android TV box and the whole display cuts out, reseat its HDMI cable and try another TV input. This check matters most when menus or other apps also lose video. It is less likely to fix a black video window inside an otherwise visible Sling app.
When to Contact Support
Contact Sling support if several channels stay black after the app, connection, and update steps, especially if the issue also appears on another device. Give them your TV model, app version, affected channels, and the steps you tried. If Sling works elsewhere but multiple video apps fail on the Android TV, contact the TV or streaming-box manufacturer.
